Forget Agatha Christie, and the stuffy countryside. This book features an ensemble of charismatic characters from all walks of life. Each chapter gives voice to different characters, which successfully propels the story. It's a refreshing, funny, and truly modern British murder mystery. I dare you not to laugh from the first page. Speaking of pages, I have to comment on how good the book looks! It definitely earns its pride of place on the bookshelf.
The Thursday Murder Club finally get their hands on a fresh murder close to the retirement village, Coopers Chase. With Elizabeth (occupation unknown) at the helm, along with the pocket-rocket Joyce (ex-nurse), clever Ibrahim (psychiatrist) and spirited Ron (ex-trade union leader), these four retirees schmooze and booze up Donna and Chris, the local police investigating the murder with a hilarious modesty. They interrogate a priest, dig up a grave, hold a strike, and drink a bit of cheeky gin and tonic all to get to the bottom of the murders and motives that began with a notorious builder (and ex-drug dealer) and a picture left at the murder scene. There are sad moments and happy moments, so settle down and enjoy Osman's masterpiece.
Believe me when I say I cannot wait until book two is released and we can delve into a clever plot and have a laugh with four charismatic retirees. I can't wait to hear more about the four rebel rousers and of course, Donna. I love Donna's dry humour and general attitude. There is literally not a cooler character than this woman.
I don't want to give away too many spoilers so I'll end my review with this: READ IT!
