For any of you eager for a fresh-faced and (relatively) foul-mouthed heroine, then this book is your new guilty pleasure.
“Well, what is it you all usually do during the day?" I made to pull the door to the stairwell but Ansel caught it and held it open for me. Okay, I didn't just like him - I adored him. "I assume it involves kicking puppies or stealing the souls of children.”
I've read more than my fair share of fantasy novels but Mahurin's new series is neither tiring nor predictable. The book alternates between two points of views, Lou and Reid, who are natural enemies as witch and witch hunter. In Belterra, the church rules. The church's defenders, the Chasseurs, guard the land against the witches who are powerful and wicked women. However, the relationship between these rivals are complicated through Lou and Reid, who are (as you will find out) more than what they seem. When these characters are thrust into holy matrimony after being found in a compromising (and amusing) position, Lou and Reid begin to recognise the attraction between them. But in Belterra magic has a scent and Lou's husband wears a uniform. Whether they get past their differences...well you'll have to read the book to find out. But, I can confirm that the ending is downright shocking.
'Every aspect of Reid was precise, certain, every colour in its proper place. Undiluted by indecision, he saw the world in black and white, suffering none of the messy, charcoal colours in between. The colours of ash and smoke. Of fear and doubt. The colours of me.'
The whispers of french, the rich imagery and the witty dialogue all make this an irresistible read. Serpent and Dove features a complex system of magic that is deadly, fascinating and frightening. What I love about this book is what so many fantasy stories often neglect, the theme of friendships, particularly female friendship. Lou and Coco (who I absolutely adore) are fierce and strong, but more than that, they support each other - kick each other's arses - when it's needed.
"...It would only be a matter of time before one of your coven stabbed me in my sleep- or turned me over to her." Coco's eyes flashed. "I'd tear out her throat." I smiled ruefully. "It's my own throat I'm worried about."
Needless to say, I've already got the next book, Blood and Honey, on my nightstand and I'm eager to jump back into Belterra and my favourite characters into more magic and (more importantly) romance.
